Job Description
Our client is a well established manufacturer of commercial heavy vehicles, located near Pleasanton California--they have an immediate need for a Director of Design Engineering who will be extensively involved in vehicle electrification and many other electrical, electronic, and electromechanical systems.
 
The Director of Design Engineering is a role vital to client's growth and future product development. This position will lead a team of engineering professionals responsible for developing vehicle system designs, including new product introduction, continuous product improvement, and fleet specific designs. The successful person will lead initiatives and strategies for improving vehicle systems and subsystems.This position reports to the VP of Engineering and is responsible for leading a team of 3 direct reports and 40-50 indirect reports.

Job Responsibilities/Essential Duties/Competencies (About the Role)

 
  • Directs and coordinates the on-time and on-budget design, development and release of new systems/subsystems and new features to existing systems
  • Responsible for standardizing legacy processes and developing new breakthrough processes
  • In charge of overall quality and performance of the vehicle systems and/or subsystems
  • Approve system level designs
  • Responsible for collaborating and communicating with production and product support to ensure design success
  • Works with Program Management in developing the strategies, plan of action, and priorities for the engineering design team
  • Key contributor to the product road mapping and the development of engineering processes
  • Lead and mentor the Design team which includes providing technical and leadership training and guidance for managers, supervisors and the engineering team
  • Provide technical and leadership training and guidance for managers and supervisors
  • Create an atmosphere of innovation and drive design excellence while assuring maximum product safety, manufacturability and cost effectiveness
  • Provide regular status updates to VP and/or executive office on design, integration, test and validation results
  • Ensures all system and subsystem designs meet all applicable federal and state regulations and safety guidelines
  • Develop key relationships with both internal teams and external suppliers, using creativity and teamwork to solve problems in the most efficient way possible
  • Oversees hiring, training, performance management, and provides leadership and coaching to ensure well-trained, motivated and goal-oriented workforce
  • Communicate with internal stakeholders the impact of industry and technology change and the potential effects on engineering. Recommend solutions without compromising quality or service while optimizing cost
 
 

Qualifications/Educational Requirements (About you)

 
  • Strong leadership skills and the ability to influence others within an interdisciplinary environment
  • Demonstrated increasing levels of technical and leadership responsibility in automotive, on/off highway or transportation equipment
  • Demonstrated design/leadership experience in ICE and electrified powertrains, collision avoidance systems, connected and autonomous vehicle technology, infotainment, electronic/electrical component/system root cause analysis, chassis/body structures, steering/suspension systems, air brake systems, vehicle dynamics, testing, validation
  • Demonstrated knowledge of FMVSS, ADA, APTA Bus Procurement Guidelines, SAE HD vehicle standards, NFPA, NEC
  • BSEE required, MSME preferred
  • Solid analytical skills and solution-driven thinking: collects and researches data; uses intuition and experience to complement data. Makes good decisions based upon a mixture of analysis, wisdom, experience and judgment
  • Demonstrated experience leading an engineering function with a proven track record in strategic engineering leadership delivering effective engineering strategies, policies, processes and systems
  • Ability to manage multiple complex projects in a matrixed, fast paced, high growth and changing environment
  • Able to carry out and coordinate a cross-functional design review at an advanced level and in a wide range of work situations without guidance
  • Demonstrated knowledge of system/component level testing and validation
  • 15+ years of progressive engineering experience
  • 10+ years of management experience
